PATIENCE

So after our last discuss on Bring Back Our Sanity, its been a while since we got a discuss to feed your eyes and mind. Many would have even grown impatient about our seeming abandonment, so I thought it right to address that topic; PATIENCE.

What is Patience?

Well patience can be referred to as the capacity of being patient, which is the ability to remain calm and not become annoyed when waiting for a long time or when dealing with problems or difficult people.
We all want things done at the time we want them done; perfect timing. As much as we love this, it doesn’t always pan out that way. We get disappointed because of the expectations placed on certain things to be done in a certain way at a certain time. The question now is what if those certain things don’t get done in the certain way we want at the certain time we expect, do we get frustrated: angry because we feel we can’t do anything about it? Or do we get angry at those who didn’t make it happen the way we wanted? Or we get stressed out because of over thinking? Now this is where patience comes in. Before delving into why patience is good for our health, lets talk about why we can’t run from patience.

1. We are all different: Our being different makes it impossible for us to exactly behave the same way. Animal lovers will know that a monkey cannot behave the same way a dog will. No matter the training addressed the monkey, the would always be differences between the monkey and a dog. We all have different personality traits that makes us who we are, taking that away will move us closer to being like robots. So our being different actually affect how we see or act or even react to certain circumstances.

2. We follow different time frame: While this could also be attributed to our being different, it also stands on its own. We all tick differently. A teacher would agree to this. There would be certain students who just grasp everything the teacher says immediately while for some, it takes longer and more explanations, still there are some who would need extra time after regular classes for proper explanation before they can understand a certain theorem. It’s the same with everyone. We tick differently, understand differently, think at different speeds and react in a different time frame to a certain issue. Another reason why we can’t escape this talk of patience.

3. We have no power over nature: There are certain things we can control, Nature is not one of them and this makes for a need to be patient. We quite know its not possible to stop the air on earth or withhold the wind from blowing which highlights the fact that there are certain things beyond our control. So not being patient leads To worry, anger, stress. In our past discussions, as explained why anger could be detrimental to our health and why we need to manage both anger and stress.

Now we highlight why we should be patient.

1. Patience is good for mental health: We start with the most obvious and most important reason to be patient. Patient people tend to experience less depression and negative emotions, perhaps because they can cope better with upsetting or stressful situations. If you want to find out more about depression, you can check past discussion about depression to understand more why patience is good. Impatience could lead to people becoming frustrated at certain issues they can overlook. Frustration leads to endless dissatisfaction. This emotion makes us tense, kills our sense of humor, also leads to procrastination just in a bid to avoid things that would cause more anger.

2. Patience makes us better people: You might wonder, ‘How does Patience make me a better person?’ Well, one way is that we become compassionate. We get to understand people more and understand why they make certain decisions at certain times. Being more understanding makes you more aware of other's pain and struggles. It helps us to be more empathetic towards people facing difficulties and helps foster peace between us and those around us.

3. Patience helps us wait until we achieve the goal we set: There’s a popular saying that ‘good things take time’. I will like to agree to that saying and use it as my argument here. For example, you don’t expect food you intend to cook to be ready within seconds of putting it on fire. You have to wait for the water to get boiled, for the food to get cooked, for you to serve your food,  before you begin eating. Similarly, to get things we want, we need to be patient.

So how can we be patient? Let’s highlight few steps we can carry out.
1. The first thing we need to do is to calm down.
2. Next we analyze the situation in hand.
3. Try to reframe the situation.
4. Then try to be more understanding
5. Understanding leads to being compassionate.
6. Being compassionate makes us good friends.
7. Then we should learn to show gratitude
These steps are some of the things that would help us stay patient. So dear readers have a patient weekend.
